Assignment 2

Edward Hopper, Morning Sun

"a girl staring out, deep in thought, too distracted to slide her way out of the light and shadows, while all it needs is a simple decision"

My design is based on the psychological turmoil that must be taking place within the protagonist's mind. It is a very bright picture, the light being direct and uncomfortable. She is alone in the room and seems to be very focused on a point outside while too distracted and deep in thought.

Site- My building will be set in the English countryside with rolling hills, as if she was in a dream and there aren't any people around to wake her up.

Model:

The main room the girl is in is square in shape and very closed off, a bed would be very close to the front window and there is a door behind it, but she is too distracted to see it. The main room is encased in a heavy and thick material, to portray the heaviness of her thoughts on her mind. It is up to her to make the simple decision, when she can, to turn her head around and see that there is a door behind her providing easy access for her way out of her confusion.

Floor Plan:

When she finally makes the decision to leave the first room, she walks out onto what seems to be a floating platform, coinciding with the dreamlike state she is in with her internal conflict. There is no roof in this section because she is almost out, there is now some shadow to protect her from the harsh sun and yet
the glass walls still reflect it in places. This area portrays her wanderings through her mind as she is trying to find her way out of the psychological difficulties. Instead of doors there are openings to allow her to easily pass through as thoughts would flow through her mind. But she still needs to find her way out, she can see the landscape beyond but there are boundaries of the walls and where the floor ends leading to a 5 meter drop. The way out is not made to be obvious, it is a hole in the slab that has a fireman's pole in the centre of it down which she can slide, but she has to actually entre the space to find the way out. Once she explores the various rooms, as she explores her mind, walking in and out of the harsh light, she can finally find the very simple way of escape, just a quick slide out and she's free.

Section:

This is a building you do not want to get into, it is a building you want to get out of, and therefore it would be very difficult to enter the building, but very easy to escape it.

Structure- The building is elevated on four columns that support the floor and are underneath it in such a way as to hide them from the view of the girl in the building, either when she
is in the main room or in the outside rooms. The exterior walls are curved panels that break up the horizontality of the landscape. And the main room is very thick and heavy, insulating her "mind" from exterior distractions, except for the window before her.
