Assignment 3

Site:
My chosen site for project 3 is site 3. When I was watching the behaviour of the people walking past the site I noticed that everyone was just walking past window shopping, the awnings created a covered path that stopped the people from looking up at the buildings on their side of the street. For my project I will try and break the path so the people have to stop and notice the gallery.

Client:
The client I have chosen is a retired rock star who’s now moved to Newtown but he misses the lifestyle, the chicks, the parties and the tattoos. So he decided to have an art gallery built that will display prints and photographs of different tattoo designs. Then if the people like some of the designs they can go straight to tattoo parlour and have them done. Also he wanted somewhere where he and his mates can hang out and drink.

The Gallery:
The gallery portrays three main spaces; the industrial section, the modern section and the minimalist section.

Industrial section:
This area is grungy messy and this is where functions are held and artworks displayed as they are suspended from the steel mesh walkways on the first level. Through this section you can see into the studio and the shop so the viewers can perceive the production of the artworks through the tattooed screen. When there is a function this area would be full of people on the ground and from above creating a party/ club scene.

Modern Section:
The double layered glass section holds the studio, the office and the shop. The two layers of glass represent tattooed skin as the interior glass walls have a pattern stretched over it and then there is the exterior glass wall creates a protective layer like the skin stretched over the ink picture.

The Minimalist section:
This consists of the apartment, the narrow –dark gallery space and the bright and white courtyard. The apartment is lit from the ceiling, it has no windows and this is to keep the courtyard very simple. When one walks from the main industrial section into the narrow dark area you are squeezed as you view the live models lit up from the top (left side) and the bottom (right side) then because of this darkened space when one walks into the courtyard it appears a lot brighter than it actually is since the natural lighting is poor because the area is surrounded by taller buildings. The ground section of the apartment opens up here because it is the kitchen area and can double as a function bar and hang out space when he has friends over, they can sit back and enjoy the art displayed and reminisce over past concerts, music and girls.
